Let’s just say we have spent months of research and correspondence with other professionals on antique vintage dolls, trying to identify this doll.....we have come to the conclusion she is a very rare Horsman “Baby Rosebud “ 14.5” doll from around 1916.
She is Part of the highly desirable “Nature Babies” series, she also resembles “Sunbonnet Sal” and “Baby Darling”, although all of her features lead us to believe she is indeed “Baby Rosebud” If you have other information that provides an identity please do share.
She is an amazing little doll, all original and truly unique. She is so rare even the doll reference site does not have a photo of her.
As well as the Horsman Doll Collectors books, which only provides a description of her and she fits it to a “T”.
One very unique feature about this sweet little baby is she has a pate ( for those of you unfamiliar with this term, it is a domed piece placed on top of an open top head (usually bisque head) to attach a wig to) which is extremely unusual/rare on a composition doll and dates her very early, around the crossover from bisque dolls to composition.
She has a wig that suits her beautifully but we believe it to be possibly an excellent replacement to her original due to the fact it is not mohair nor human hair but a very realistic synthetic.
Everything else on this pretty girl is original.
Perfect blue tin open and close eyes With NO scratches or flaws, She has a “Rosebud” Dolly face with delicate and detailed original factory paint. Upper and lower painted eyelashes, and perfect rosebud mouth. Her head and shoulder plate are one piece. She is inscribed on back of her shoulder plate “Horsman Co Inc.” She has a very firm cloth body stuffed with (we are guessing) cork.
1/4 composition arms/hands. Her legs are disk jointed and made from oilcloth, also in perfect condition.
Her amazing outfit is described in the “Nature Babies” series dolls reference as:
“Baby Rosebud” came in sizes 14 1/2” to 26” wearing a French baby outfit of white with collar and cuffs of contrasting rose pink, and pink embroidery trim.
Baby Darling seemed the same in a different outfit, lace trimmed lawn dress, matching cape, and flannel coat.“
Her outfit is In incredible condition despite being over 100 years old! No spots or stains, remarkably preserved.
Beautiful white/creamy ivory lawn dress with intricate embroidery and lace, her gown has it’s original 3 tiny pearly buttons on back. One piece undergarment is a ribbed silky fabric (a couple small splits in the fabric on her under garment where her legs and arms bend) so detailed and pretty! Her coat and bonnet are a light ecru or taupe ivory color. They appear to be a very lightweight wool? The coat has a cape collar. The matching bonnet is missing the delicate fabric back part covering her head (although I do sew using vintage fabrics we have left this as it is to maintain her aged charm) the brim is still present with original factory ribbon trims.
Both the coat and bonnet have a few very tiny holes from age but these do not detract from the original beauty of this adorable little girl.
The coat has one top pearly button matching the buttons on back of the dress and also one on each coat sleeve cuff.
Truly a treasure! Exquisite little doll and a fabulous part of history.
Don’t pass her up we have never ever seen another!
Lovely doll to add to your collection!
