    PONY RACES
Galloway and Pony Races are held in the principal
pony breeding districts. They are also a feature at
many gymkhanas, and races for pit ponies ridden
bare backed by pit boys are popular io the mining
    districts.
A Galloway is a horse not over 15 hands and is
now generally referred to as a Cob, although strictly
speaking that term should only be applied to animals
    of a stout build.
A Pony used to mean a horse of 14 hands or under,
but now-a-days so-called 'Ponies' are often much
above that height, the requirements of modern polo
having led to a very loose use of the word.
